The Consolidated South Western Railroad
Operating Sessions on March 8, 2008

The February Afternoon Session was canceled due to everyone’s involvement in the 2008 Rondy.

The March 8, evening session went very smoothly and all had a good time.  Roy Foster was at his usual post in the A Yard and Pat Durand was back at his position in the B Yard.  The Maintenance Department had the North Track blocked for vegetation control for much of the Session, requiring all trains to use the South Track between Cajon and Summit.

We continue to be short on Local Crews, so if you like to do locals and switching, please feel free to join us.

The CSWRR Operating Sessions are held twice a month on the second Saturday evening, starting at 6 PM and on the fourth Saturday afternoon, starting at 1 PM.  The next Afternoon Session will be held on March 22, starting at 1 PM and the next Evening Session will be on April 12, starting at 6 PM.  If you would be interested in attending one of the CSWRR Operating Sessions to take an active part or to just watch, please visit the CSWRR Web-Page or call Marty Quaas at 746-6414.  Do not be intimidated by the operation as there are many easy trains as well as complex ones.  New operators are paired with experienced operators for the first several runs and we can accommodate different skill levels from beginner to experienced.

Return to Model Railroading in Alaska.

The Model Railroading in Alaska Newsletter
April 2008

This year as in past years, the 2008 Fur Rondezvous was another great success for Model Railroaders in the Anchorage area.  There were two areas in town the largest at the Alaska Railroad Depot and a second display a couple miles across town in Russian Jack Springs Park, the Northern Lights Model Railroad Club was on display on the weekends.

The Military Society of Model Railroad Engineers had HO and N Scale Modules setup at the ARR Depot and I also had my Mooselip Display set up there.  With great weather and better Rondy management, the crowds seemed to be larger compared to last year and I am guessing that around 19000 visitors, some more then once filed through the depot doors during the nine days of the display.  A major boost came on Thursday when Channel 2 News visited Mooselip and had clips on the 5, 6, and 10 PM News as well as the following day AM news.

The Northern Lights Model Railroad Club had their Alaska Northern Railroad open for visitors on the two weekends, Friday Saturday and Sunday.  They also hosted near record crowds of over 750 visitors and interestingly are seeing second and now some third generation visitors to their events.  The Northern Lights Club also featured 5 free door prizes, three of which were round trip train tickets for two as well as two train sets.

A young onlooker stands in awe as he peears through the glass at Northern Lights Model Railroad Club’s Alaska Northern Railroad.  This picture by Charles Leo was repeated many times through out the 2008 Rondy.
At the Alaska Railroad Depot, a young lady watches a passenger train roll by on the Mooselip Display Railroad.
In this Charles Leo photo, many visitors at the Northern Lights Model Railroad Club In Russian Jack Springs Park leave their smudges on the glass as they try to get a closer look at the all the details.
Many folks think that they are getting a great view of the Model Railroad displays, well let me assure you that the displayers also get to watch all the happy faces studying the displays as this cowgirl at the Alaska Railroad Depot.
